If you regularly sing “Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me,” we might have a HUGE update for you.

Pirates of the Caribbean

Okay, so we’ve been trying to get more details from Disney about the Pirates of the Caribbean tavern in Magic Kingdom that was announced back in September 2023. All the information we got was that it would be a new bar themed around Pirates of the Caribbean that it would feature Barker Bird. But Disney’s been quiet on details ever since, so we’ve been looking for construction in Adventureland that could signal it’s coming soon. We recently turned up a new permit that could provide a hint, and now we’ve got actual signs of construction.

The permit was filed on May 31st for general construction at an address that aligned with Plaza del Sol Caribe, which is the Pirates of the Caribbean gift shop you walk through when you exit the ride. The contractor named on the permit is Whiting-Turner, who has previously worked with Disney Imagineering in the past — however, this permit is not for Imagineering.

Now, a permit for general construction could be for minor updates or major updates, so we weren’t sure exactly what might be happening at this location. We did notice that the permit had an expiration date of August 31st, 2025, which is generally later than we might have expected (most permits only have an expiration date of around a year). So that could mean this is more of a major update.

Inside the store

It seems like the construction planned is happening SOON, though, because as of today, June 19th, we saw construction walls inside the store. So, something will likely happen here soon.

We also asked a Cast Member at the store if this could have something to do with the Pirates of the Caribbean tavern, but the Cast Member was unsure.

Some people are speculating that the tavern will be where the Pirates League used to be located. The Pirates League has been closed since 2020. That location would be near the entrance to Pirates of the Caribbean. The Pirates League used to be a salon similar to Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, except kids could get pirate makeovers.

We also recently noticed that Tortuga Tavern was closed, although Cast Members told us it was a seasonal closure. That was interesting to hear because that restaurant is typically open during the busy summer season. We also noticed the menu was completely removed, which is something we often see when a spot permanently closes.

We’ll be keeping an eye out for construction around Pirates of the Caribbean and elsewhere in Magic Kingdom (there is a big expansion on the way, after all), so stay tuned to DFB for more.
