A 4-year-old girl and her mother were injured Saturday morning in Deltona after the child’s father reported that he accidentally discharged a handgun, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a home on Boxelder Street at about 9:50 a.m. When they arrived, the father was carrying the child, who had apparent gunshot wounds to her chest and arm. The girl’s mother was found inside the home with a towel pressed against a gunshot wound to her leg.

Both victims were conscious and alert. Deputies provided emergency trauma care, applying tourniquets to both victims and a chest seal to the child before emergency medical personnel arrived.

The girl was airlifted by Air One to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital. Her mother was transported to HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital.

The father told deputies he was preparing to go to a shooting range when the handgun discharged as he was attempting to clear it.

The investigation remains active. The sheriff’s office has not released additional information about the victims’ conditions or whether any charges will be filed.
