Newly-released 911 calls from the city of Palm Bay detail what school employees say led up to a video screen falling and killing an elementary school student last week.

Five-year-old Bellamy Dawkins-Morris died on Oct. 7 after the Promethean interactive display board fell on him inside Riviera Elementary School in Palm Bay.

In the 911 call, the caller tells the dispatcher that the boy took the video board off the wall and was kicking the screen. They say they told him to stop.

They also say they asked someone to tighten the screen attachment a week prior to the incident.

Dawkins-Morris’s family retained The Haggard Law Firm to investigate what happened and determine who would be responsible for the boy’s death.

Last week, Brevard Public Schools officials identified a third-party company connected to the board, Atlantic Electric Services.

BPS stated it is actively inspecting the remaining boards across all campuses and cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation.

News 6 is reaching out to the district, the Palm Bay Police Department, and the family’s attorney to get their reaction to the revelations in the 911 call.

The school district released this statement Thursday afternoon:

“Our hearts are broken by this unimaginable tragedy. We are devastated by the loss of this precious child, and our deepest sympathies remain with his family as they endure a pain no family should ever have to experience.

“The district has listened to the 911 call. Our initial internal inspections after this tragedy did not identify any visibly loose screws. However, an independent third party is conducting their own investigation, and we will share that once the investigation has concluded.

“Following this tragic incident, the district immediately initiated inspections of all Promethean boards across the district. Those inspections are ongoing.

“The Palm Bay Police Department’s investigation remains ongoing as well, and Brevard Public Schools continues to fully cooperate. As this is an open investigation, we are limited in the information we can share at this time.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with Bellamy’s family during this heartbreaking time.”
