Marvel’s mutants are officially preparing to enter a new era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel Studios’ New X-Men Movie
During the 2026 D23 Entertainment Showcase, Marvel Studios announced that its untitled X-Men reboot will be released in theaters on May 5, 2028. The film is expected to begin the MCU’s next overarching saga following Avengers: Secret Wars, which is currently scheduled for December 17, 2027.
Jake Schreier, who previously directed Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts*, will helm the reboot. Lee Sung Jin, creator of Netflix’s Beef, and The Bear co-showrunner Joanna Calo are working on the screenplay.
Marvel also officially revealed the film’s principal cast during the D23 presentation. Sadie Sink will portray Jean Grey, while Kit Connor will play Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops. Samara Weaving has been cast as Emma Frost.
The ensemble also includes Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, and Adam Driver as the villain Mister Sinister.
The new cast will succeed the performers who portrayed the mutant heroes throughout 20th Century Fox’s long-running X-Men film franchise. Disney obtained the screen rights to the X-Men when its acquisition of most of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets was completed in 2019.
Several stars from the Fox films will return before the reboot in Avengers: Doomsday, including Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, and Kelsey Grammer as Beast.
Recent Avengers: Doomsday concept art showed the veteran X-Men assembling alongside the Avengers and Fantastic Four to confront Doctor Doom. Their appearance may help transition Marvel away from the previous film continuity before the new generation takes center stage.
The untitled X-Men movie will be released on May 5, 2028.
