The city of Palm Bay has announced that it will begin returning its Flock automated license plate readers back to service after they were suspended earlier this month.

City Manager Matthew Morton originally explained there were concerns that FLOCK Safety, the system vendor, may not have properly permitted or installed the cameras around the city, leading to the suspension.

“The suspension was initiated to allow City staff to verify that each camera had been installed in accordance with approved plans and City right-of-way permitting requirements,” a release from the city reads.

As such, the system was taken offline, and the cameras were hooded.

On Tuesday, though, city officials said that the cameras were confirmed to have been installed correctly, meaning the city will begin gradually removing the coverings from the camera and turning the system back on.

“When questions were raised, we did not ignore them. We stopped the system, reviewed the facts, and made sure the proper requirements were met,” Palm Bay Mayor Rob Medina said. “This was not about abandoning a public safety tool. It was about accountability and ensuring that our own policies and permitting standards were being followed. Those issues have now been addressed and rectified, and we can move forward knowing the City took the appropriate steps to protect both public trust and public safety.”
