A homeowner fatally shot a female trying to get inside his house early Tuesday morning, according to the Leesburg Police Department.
In a release, police said they responded to the home around 4:43 a.m. in the 1600 block of Crest Avenue regarding the reported break-in attempt.
“According to the homeowner, he repeatedly instructed the female to leave the property and warned her that he was armed,” police said.
However, the homeowner said she continued trying to get inside, at which point he fired a handgun through the door, breaking a window, investigators explained.
“The female then reached through the broken window in an attempt to open the door from inside,” the release continues. “The homeowner fired a second time, striking the female. She was pronounced dead at the scene.”
Now, police said they are investigating the incident and are working with the State Attorney’s Office to determine whether any criminal charges are appropriate.
No additional information has been provided at this time, including the female’s age, identity or the circumstances behind the attempted break-in.
Meanwhile, anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Leesburg Police Department at (352) 787-2121 or Crimeline at (800) 423-8477.
