A Groveland police sergeant who was found to have been speeding more than 100 mph in a department vehicle while on his way to work has resigned from the force.

The city confirmed Sgt. Alexander Jarrell’s resignation on Friday, effective immediately.

An internal investigation found Jarrell had, on three separate occasions, driven his department vehicle at speeds of more than 100 mph, with his emergency lights on. In none of those occasions was Jarrell going to an emergency, the agency found. Instead, they say he was simply driving to work.

Jarrell was suspended for three days, lost the use of his take-home vehicle for 30 days, and was placed on work probation for six months.

Jarrell’s case is tied to the firing of Groveland Police Chief Shawn Ramsey, which happened this week.

A City of Groveland termination notice said Ramsey’s disciplinary action against Jarrell was too lenient. The notice also said Ramsey had misled the city attorney and city manager by saying Jarrell had only one instance of speeding, not three.

Ramsey is already suing the city, accusing officials of retaliation because of a whistleblower complaint.
