A trespassing dispute turned deadly after a man shot and killed another man he found asleep in the laundry room of his home, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies and DeLand police responded just before 11 p.m. Tuesday to a trespassing complaint at a home on N. Boulevard Court near DeLand. The caller told dispatch he had shot the trespasser, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

The deceased had previously stayed at the property on and off but was no longer permitted to do so. On Tuesday night, he was found asleep in the laundry room of the home, which prompted an argument between the two men, the news release states.

During the confrontation, the shooter said the trespasser advanced on him despite repeated warnings to step back, or he would be shot. The shooter then fired several rounds, the sheriff’s office said.

The caller remained on scene and was standing at the roadside with his hands raised when deputies arrived. The man he shot was found lying in the driveway with multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.

The investigation is ongoing.
