Finding a parking spot at New Smyrna Beach could soon become easier.

City commissioners are expected to consider a new parking guidance system Tuesday. The system would use an app to show drivers available spaces, parking rates, and time limits.

The city is also considering installing LED signs in parking lots that would display the same information as the app.

David Herrold, who has visited New Smyrna Beach for more than 20 years, said the Flagler Avenue beachfront parking lot fills up quickly.

“People just keep going around and around,” Herrold said. “Once in a while, I would just leave and come back later because it would be endless.”

Of the city’s roughly 1,300 parking spaces, 1,075 would be monitored under the proposed system. That would include most city-owned parking lots, Canal Street, Flagler Avenue, mainland parking areas and street parking within two blocks north and south of the beachfront.

“It will also help the businesses,” said Steven Mendygral, the city’s director of mobility and parking. “I always say the quicker someone parks, the quicker they can spend their money in the restaurants and shops.”

The system would remain in place even as the city considers adopting Volusia County’s off-beach parking passes in municipal lots.

Installation and the first year of service are expected to cost nearly $500,000. The expense would be paid from the city’s parking fund.

If approved, the system would be the first of its kind in Volusia County and is expected to be operational by Christmas.
