A musical based on the days after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks is performing in Orlando.

“Come From Away” tells the true story of 7,000 stranded passengers and the small town of Gander in Newfoundland, Canada, that welcomed them.

On Sept. 11, the U.S. Federal Aviation Authority shut down airspace, forcing more than 4,000 planes to land at the nearest airport. Inbound flights from Europe were diverted to Canada.

It wasn’t until Sept. 13 that planes began to be cleared for takeoff again.

For the stranded passengers in Gander, cultures clashed and nerves were running high, but that all turned into trust, music, gratitude, and enduring friendships, like the one between Hannah and Beulah.

On Sept. 16, the remaining passengers were able to fly back home.

The smash-hit musical has won many awards, including a Tony for Best Direction of a Musical.

The musical also gives back to Orlando firefighters.

The performance on Sept. 11 will include a special conversation with Assistant Fire Chief Aaron Rhodes, who helped his friends at FDNY following the aftermath of the terrorist attacks. He was part of search and rescue efforts and he attended funeral services for the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice.
