At least eight people were wounded after a gathering ended in a shooting Saturday night in Sanford, police said.

Officers responded just before 10 p.m. to the area of Poplar Avenue and West 10th Street. Investigators say a group was in the street for what they describe as a “family gathering” when suspects started shooting. Police arrived within minutes and secured the scene.

According to police, of the eight victims, five have been treated and released from the hospital. Three victims remain hospitalized — two in critical condition and one in stable condition.

“Our investigators are still working diligently to understand what caused someone to commit such a violent act,” Chief Cecil Smith said. “We need our community to stand together, and if anyone has any additional information, please come forward.”

The motive for the shooting remains unknown. No arrests have been made, and investigators continue to work to identify those responsible.

“I’m saying to the people here in Sanford, and those who know what’s going on, speak up. Because the last thing you want to do is have this happen to your family members,” Smith said.
