The owner of Wicked Arsenal withdrew a proposal Wednesday to turn 54 acres near Groveland into an outdoor firearms training range after neighbors raised hours of concerns about safety, noise and the site’s proximity to homes.

The proposal was discussed during a Lake County Planning and Zoning meeting. The property, located off Crawford Road near the Sloan Ridge community, is currently zoned for agricultural use.

Residents spoke one after another, urging the board and the owner to stop the plan.

“Five hundred feet from somebody’s house is not suitable for a commercial gun range,” Lawton Rozar said. “It’s just bad planning.”

Neighbors said they were especially concerned about how close the proposed target area would be to nearby homes.

Del Ramsey, who lives near the property, attended the meeting with her family. She said residents felt their concerns had not been taken seriously.

“They have not taken any responsibility,” Ramsey said. “They have no feelings for our community out there. If they did, they would not have done everything they’ve done out there.”

Planning and zoning members also questioned several parts of the proposal, including the direction of fire, the distance between the target area and homes, the expected noise and the height of the proposed safety barriers.

The owner initially asked for more time to address the concerns, but the committee turned down that request.

For now, the outdoor gun range plan will not move forward.
