The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is in mourning after they said a fatal crash claimed the life of one of their deputies Saturday night.
Deputy Kevin Morris, 55, was killed as he was headed to the scene of a deputy-involved shooting. He was driving on Interstate 95 when a driver, going the wrong way, hit Morris, leading to a crash that killed him and the 26-year-old female driver of the other car, the sheriff’s office said.
Florida Highway Patrol said that the driver had made a U-turn near State Road 46 and ended up driving northbound in the southbound lanes, leading to the crash.
Ivey said the driver was on her way home to Kissimmee from a Brevard County wedding.
The sheriff commented on the crash, saying, “I know two things with absolute conviction today. One is that Kevin’s wife and family, his children, know that he was doing what he loved.”
Sheriff Ivey continued, saying, “And the second thing I know, I know where Kevin is right now. I know he’s sitting up there looking down on all of us.”

Ivey said the office will be a “wall of strength” for his team and Kevin’s family.
He also said multiple agencies, including police departments in Brevard County and the governor’s office, have reached out.
Prior to joining the sheriff’s office in 2011, Morris worked for the Palm Bay Police Department for 10 years, where he was part of the patrol division and a school resource officer at Heritage High School. He was also assigned to the department’s traffic unit, where he worked alongside Harley, a narcotics K9.
“Kevin was loved by all who knew him, and he is described as always being a genuine, friendly person to be around who was always willing to provide a helping hand. The Palm Bay Police Department mourns Kevin’s passing with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. Our hearts go out to his family and everyone else who is grieving during this time. This devastating loss is surely felt by so many within our community.”

The deputy-involved shooting happened after a well-being check in Mims. A man called deputies to do a well-being check on his 79-year-old father, who was allegedly suicidal. Deputies arrived and determined the father met the criteria for a Baker Act, according to the sheriff’s office.
As medical transport arrived, deputies say the 79-year-old grabbed a gun that he had concealed and pointed it at the deputies. Deputies shot the man, and he died at the hospital, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies are not releasing the name of the deputies or the man who died, and all deputies involved are on paid administrative leave while the investigation is underway.
The sheriff’s office is investigating and will forward their findings to the State Attorney’s Office for an independent review.
FHP is investigating the crash.
