The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and the wider community are mourning Agent Kevin Morris, a homicide investigator who died Saturday night in a fiery head-on crash while responding to a deputy-involved shooting.

Authorities said Morris was on his way to the earlier shooting scene when the crash happened. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating how the other driver ended up traveling the wrong way and whether impairment played a role.

Morris’ death has shaken his agency, his family, his friends and the law enforcement community across Central Florida.

“This morning, our agency, our community, family of Kevin are absolutely devastated,” Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said. “Kevin was probably one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet in your life.”

Johnna Kemp, a longtime friend of Morris, said she first met him in 2009, when her son and Morris’ son began playing football together and Morris was coaching.

Over the years, she said, Morris became more than a coach. He became someone families trusted on and off the field.

“Kevin was like a compass,” Kemp said. “I mean, if you were looking for direction, you could go to Kevin and his values, his voice. They would just guide you.”

Kemp described Morris as a steady leader in every part of his life.

“Kevin was a leader. Kevin led on the field. Kevin led the church. Kevin led his job,” she said.

Before joining the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office in 2021, Morris served with the Palm Bay Police Department from 2001 to 2012. Video from Palm Bay police shows another part of his law enforcement career: K-9 training.

At the sheriff’s office, Morris served as a homicide agent.

Those who knew him said his loss extends far beyond the badge.

“I just keep going back to what a horrific loss to the community, to the other officers, to the families, to the friends, to everybody that absolutely knew him, loved him,” Kemp said. “There was not a bad word that could be said about Kevin. And I promise you, there’s not a dry eye anywhere.”

Other law enforcement agencies have shared tributes and messages of support on social media, reflecting the grief being felt across the region.

Investigators have not determined whether alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash. The Florida Highway Patrol has taken over the investigation, and officials are awaiting more information from the medical examiner’s office about the 26-year-old driver’s condition at the time of the crash.
