A fingerprint left on a television mount helped investigators identify a “career criminal” as the suspect in a burglary at a DeLand church, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

In a release, deputies said they responded to the DeLand Spanish SDA Church on Aug. 21, where they found pry marks on a youth chapel door and a broken window. Several televisions, speakers and other items had been stolen.

However, detectives then identified “a print of value” from one of the television mounts, deputies added.

Investigators said it matched Steven Shurr, 55, who is not a church parishioner and was staying about a quarter-mile from the church at the time of the burglary.

Shurr, who lives in Lake County, was arrested Thursday evening by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office on a Volusia County warrant.

He now faces charges of grand theft with damage, and burglary of a structure causing damage over $1,000.

The VSO noted that Shurr has a criminal history including 32 prior felony charges and 10 prior misdemeanors, including 10 previous burglary arrests.
