The Walt Disney Company has created a brand-new executive position, and it’s going to someone who spent the last stretch of his career running an AI chatbot company. Disney announced that Karandeep Anand will join as Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. The role has never existed at the company before. Anand starts October 2nd and will report directly to Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro.
Disney Hires Former AI Chatbot CEO as First-Ever CTO

IN THIS ARTICLE:
- Karandeep Anand becomes Disney’s first-ever Chief Technology Officer, effective October 2nd
- He most recently served as CEO of Character.AI, and some of that company’s technical staff are expected to follow him to Disney
- The hire is the latest in a string of AI-focused moves D’Amaro has made since becoming CEO
A Newly Created Role at the Top of Disney’s Org Chart
Disney has never had a Chief Technology Officer before. That makes this less a replacement hire and more a structural change at the top of the company. As CTO, Anand will oversee enterprise technology, infrastructure, data and AI platforms, product, and engineering. He’ll work across Disney’s various segment technology teams to modernize how the company builds and delivers technology company-wide. That’s a wide mandate, touching everything from the systems that power Disney+ to the tools Imagineers use to design attractions.
Anand will report directly to D’Amaro rather than through an existing chain of command. That underscores how central this role is meant to be. “Karandeep brings a rare mix of experience across infrastructure, consumer technology and AI, and will be a vital addition to Disney’s senior leadership team as we further our three priorities: great storytelling as our North Star, technology in service of creativity, and operating as One Disney,” D’Amaro said. He added that Anand is “an expert builder and strategist, technical and product-minded, with sharp instincts for what fans actually want.”
From Character.AI to the Mouse House
Anand’s most recent job makes this hire notable. He’ was the CEO of Character.AI, the consumer AI platform where users create and converse with chatbot characters. According to Disney, he led the company through “a period of explosive growth, building one of the most engaged consumer-AI audiences in the world,” while also prioritizing user trust and safety as the platform scaled. Disney also said a number of Character.AI’s technical team members are expected to join the company alongside him. That suggests this isn’t just a single executive hire, but the start of a small team transplant.
Before Character.AI, Anand was President and Chief Product Officer at the fintech company Brex. He also spent time in leadership roles at Meta’s Facebook, most recently as Vice President of Ads & Business Products. Earlier in his career, he held senior product and engineering positions at Microsoft across 15 years, including a stint on the team that built the Azure platform. He holds a Computer Science degree from the International Institute of Information Technology in Hyderabad. For his part, Anand framed the move as a lifelong interest finally converging with his career. “I’ve admired Disney my entire life for how it blends unforgettable storytelling with the latest technology to constantly push the boundaries of what entertainment can be,” he said.
Another Data Point in Disney’s AI Buildout
This hire didn’t happen in a vacuum. D’Amaro has spent much of his tenure as CEO pushing AI deeper into Disney’s operations. Disney detailed how far that effort had already gone during its fiscal third-quarter earnings call in August, when the company said its J.A.R.V.I.S. tool was already in use by more than 2,000 Imagineers. Digital twin simulation tools, Disney said at the time, were also helping design the planned Abu Dhabi park. D’Amaro emphasized on that call that Disney’s approach is meant to stay “human-centered” and “artist-driven.” That’s a framing Disney is likely to lean on again as it explains what Anand’s new role means for the company’s creative teams.
Disney has also been building out guest-facing AI tools at Walt Disney World. That includes an AI-powered vacation planning feature rolling out in a beta format to DisneyWorld.com, built in partnership with Google Cloud. The tool lets guests search by season instead of fixed dates, and it lets them ask follow-up questions in a chat interface.
Disney’s AI push hasn’t been without a stumble. The company’s plan to work with OpenAI collapsed after a $1 billion Sora licensing deal fell apart, when OpenAI shut the video tool down earlier this year. In the aftermath, Walt Disney Imagineering posted a listing for an Executive of AI Platform Engineering to build what it called an AI-first platform for Imagineering’s design workflows. Anand’s CTO role sits above that kind of position. It gives Disney a single executive accountable for how all of these AI threads, guest-facing and internal alike, tie together.
Disney has not said whether Anand’s arrival will affect the pace or shape of any of these existing AI initiatives. It also hasn’t said how his mandate will divide from Imagineering’s own AI hiring push. We’ll continue watching for more details on how Anand’s role takes shape once he’s officially started.
