A dog found hurt and tied near a dumpster in St. Cloud is now out of an animal hospital and in the care of a Central Florida rescue.

Sarah Schmidt, president of The Pittie Party of Central Florida, said she responded after learning the dog, Ezra, had been found abandoned eight days earlier.

Schmidt said Ezra was terrified when she arrived and had wounds on her legs. She said the dog was also struggling to put weight on her back legs.

Police scanned Ezra’s microchip, which led them to her owner, Patty Weddel.

“I didn’t believe the officer when he told me,” Weddel said. “There’s just no way.”

Weddel said Ezra and her littermate, Elvis, had been family dogs since they were rescued as three-week-old puppies.

On Monday, News 6 saw a St. Cloud police officer meet with Schmidt. Schmidt said she provided police with a written affidavit detailing what she heard from the child.

St. Cloud police told News 6 they are working to provide additional information but have not confirmed the rescue’s account or said whether anyone could face charges.

Ezra’s case comes days after a separate incident involving her littermate.

Osceola County said Elvis attacked and killed another dog on or about Sept. 23, then bit that dog’s owner seven times.

According to the county, Elvis’s owner surrendered him to Osceola County Animal Services and listed the reason as “dangerous and aggressive.”

Animal Services determined Elvis was not a candidate for adoption and later euthanized him.

Ezra has now been signed over to The Pittie Party of Central Florida.

“These dogs, when they get dumped, they sit there and wait and wait and wait for their owners to come back,” Schmidt said. “They don’t know what’s going on.”

News 6 is continuing to seek additional information from St. Cloud police.
