Downtown Orlando residents are sharing their views on safety following a stabbing Friday. The discussion also comes as the city announced last week that an affordable apartment complex called The Beacon is open in Creative Village.

One resident said the city could do more to protect people.

“I feel like the city could do more to actually protect its citizens, and that takes more than just creating regions where folks can get a house,” the resident said.

Mr. Triune, who said he is homeless, described being attacked while sleeping near Lake Ivanhoe. He said the attack happened Saturday.

Despite this he says he still feels safe downtown, citing the police presence.

“They always have a lot of cops down here. I always feel safe here in Downtown Orlando,” he said.

Downtown remains marred by the deadly Halloween 2024 mass shooting, which left nine people shot and two dead.

Jenae Marie, who is new to downtown, said she believes people need to be aware of their surroundings wherever they live.

“I think anywhere you go, I’ve lived all over America, anywhere you go there’s areas, you know, where to stay out of and where to go,” she said. Overall, she would not describe downtown Orlando as dangerous.

The city also announced The Beacon last week. The announcement came the same day a man was arrested on a sexual battery charge in the same community.

News 6 reached out to the city for a response to residents who want to see more done to improve safety. The suspect in Friday’s stabbing is due in court Tuesday.
