A memorial gathering in Sanford honoring 18-year-old Zi’Erric Wynn turned into a scene of panic Saturday night when gunfire erupted, according to Sanford Police.

Wynn’s grandmother, Shirley Wynn, said family and friends have gathered for the past six years near a park on 10th Street to remember him.

Zi’Erric Wynn was a senior at Seminole High when he died in a crash six years ago this week, she said.

“Why? That’s the only thing I think all of us want to know,” Shirley Wynn told News 6. “Why did you come to our celebration and destroy it?”

Zi’Erric’s grandmother says this year’s gathering turned into everything her grandson was not about.

Police have released a heavily redacted report of the mass shooting. It says a witness told officers multiple people got out of a car and opened fire, and that at least one person had what was described as a “long gun.”

Shirley Wynn said people ran in fear and didn’t stop to look back.

“It might have been one person with two guns, or it could have been two different people,” she said, adding that she ran and hid behind a garbage can in her mother’s yard.

Sanford Police said eight people were hurt, including seven who were shot. The report says victims suffered gunshot wounds, including to the head, neck and back.

No arrests have been announced.

Sanford Police Chief Cecil Smith urged the public to help investigators, saying that it is not only up to police.

“People know what took place, people know who these shooters are, people need to be more involved,” Smith said.

Leaning on her faith, Shirley Wynn shared a simple, direct message for those responsible.

“They can run from man all they want to, but God sit high and he look low,” she said. “So you can run from man, but you can’t run from God, so sooner or later somebody’s going to tell who you are.”
