Hollywood Studios is set to see a MAJOR addition next year, as the Monsters, Inc. Monstropolis land is set to open (almost) in its entirety in 2027. The new land is sure to be jammed with visitors from the jump, which got us thinking it could be beneficial for Disney to add a second entrance to Monstropolis.

Unfortunately, adding a second entrance shortcut into the land may be a bit more complicated than it sounds.

Let’s give a quick rundown of the land just in case you’ve missed anything! Set after the 2001 film, Monstropolis will be themed around a celebration of “H.U.M.A.N. Day.” Short for “Humans Understand Monsters Are Nice,” the land is “designed to introduce humans to life inside Monstropolis while helping monsters discover that humans are not so frightening after all.” Humans are invited to “explore the city, meet its citizens, taste unique cuisine, and step into the everyday world of monsters in a totally new way.”

When Monstropolis opens sometime next year, it won’t be entirely complete. See, Disney confirmed that the land’s main attraction, the long-awaited door coaster, which will mimic the climax of the film by taking guests inside the Monsters, Inc. factory, lift them 40 feet into the air in four seconds, and utilize Disney’s first suspended ride system, won’t be ready in time for the land’s debut. However, that doesn’t mean there won’t be much to do in the land. Far from it!

While it’s not clear when the coaster will debut, the version of Monstropolis that opens in 2027 will feature The Glob Theater and its “Welcome to Monstropolis” show, a presentation hosted by Mike and Sulley, which will “introduce humans to Monstropolis.” Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza quick-service eatery, the Monsters University Alumni Club, the Scareporium store, and the previously announced Harryhausen’s restaurant, which will feature a sushi-slinging Animatronic monster chef!

So, suffice it to say, Monstropolis is sure to be pretty crowded at opening despite the lack of its e-ticket attraction. However, Disney’s concept art as well as construction photos so far show there will only be one entrance to the land.

Part of this is due to geography. See, Monstropolis is taking over the land once occupied by the Muppet Courtyard, as well as former backstage areas, leaving it somewhat “locked in” on three sides. If one were to stand at the main gate, the land features backstage areas behind it, Star Tours directly to its left, and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge to the right. That only leaves two areas for a second entrance/shortcut, and both of them have issues.

First, let’s look at the Star Tours side. Potentially, a new pathway could go behind the attraction and flow into Monstropolis. This could be especially convenient once the door coaster opens, as it would deposit riders right near the ride’s Monsters, Inc. Factory facade. However, this would require rearranging even more backstage support areas essential to Cast Members.

On the other side, there’s Galaxy’s Edge. Now having an entrance connecting the massive Star Wars land to a Pixar-related land is nothing new — after all, the land is already linked to Toy Story Land — but things may be more complicated.

See, the entrance would need to be located near the Rise of the Resistance forest/queue area, which could make it very tricky from a space standpoint. That lack of space may make it hard to create an appropriate, slow-burn thematic transition like those seen in the other Galaxy Edge entrances.

Door coaster or not, Monstropolis is sure to be massively popular when it opens in 2027, and we’re hoping Disney’s going to add a second entrance shortcut to the land to mitigate those crowds. Stay tuned to DFB for more on this upcoming land.
