New body camera video shows the moments after a juvenile was shot in the leg in the Ocoee High School parking lot following Friday night’s football game, according to the Ocoee Police Department.
Police say the shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. after the Ocoee vs. Jones High game. Investigators say the juvenile who was shot has since been released from the hospital as of Monday afternoon.
The body camera footage shows an officer treating the victim at the scene.
News 6 showed the video to Belen Cespedes, a high school junior who lives nearby and said she heard the gunshot from her home.
“It makes sense for students to kind of freak out and start running,” she said. “It’s a really stressful thing to watch and honestly, kind of hard to watch. I can’t imagine how the students feel, honestly.”
Cespedes said her family initially thought it could have been fireworks.
“It’s a closed neighborhood, right, so you don’t typically see that kind of stuff,” she said.
Orange County Public Schools told News 6 the people involved had no known connection to either school.
Recent Ocoee High graduate Charles Flores said he has seen fights break out after games in the past, but was surprised this incident turned into a shooting.
However, he said it would not deter him from attending future district sporting events.
“I still feel safe going to the games,” he said. “I’m still going to go. I don’t have a problem with it, and I think Ocoee will catch the people that did it.”
News 6 asked OCPS about possible security changes for future games.
The district provided a statement, which reads in part, “District staff routinely review and update procedures to identify opportunities for improvement and enhance campus safety.”
Ocoee police said 10 officers worked the game and they will coordinate with the school district on future security needs.
Police are asking anyone who was in the parking lot to check their phones for video or photos and contact investigators.
