A brief comment from filmmaker Leslie Iwerks may have revealed a key feature of Disney California Adventure’s next major attraction.
New Ride Technology on Avengers Infinity Defense
The media incorporated into Avengers Infinity Defense will supposedly adjust based on guests’ viewing perspective, offering a new clue about how the upcoming Disney California Adventure attraction will create its multiverse-spanning environments.
Documentary filmmaker Leslie Iwerks briefly discussed the attraction in a new interview about her upcoming film, Disney Worldbuilders. While describing the technology featured in the documentary, Iwerks referenced comments from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige:
Kevin Feige describes the new attraction being built at Avengers Campus and how the ride system with screens that shift with the guest’s point of view is going to redefine what a themed experience can be.
Although Iwerks appears to be paraphrasing Feige rather than quoting him directly, the reference to screens shifting with a guest’s point of view suggests something more complex than ride vehicles simply stopping in front of static displays.
Previously released Walt Disney Imagineering footage may demonstrate the concept. A sequence in the “Let’s Ride” episode of We Call It Imagineering shows Imagineers seated in a mock-up Avengers Infinity Defense vehicle within a larger testing environment. They face a projected outer space scene before two screen panels physically separate, expanding the riders’ view into a larger digital display.
The footage, of course, only reflects developmental testing and not a finished attraction scene. However, it shows Imagineering experimenting with the relationship between the vehicle, multiple projection surfaces, and guests’ changing sightlines.
Iwerks’ wording could mean the projected imagery will adjust according to the vehicle’s position and orientation. Screens may also physically move or open as the riders’ viewpoint changes, as seen in the test footage. Either technique could help digital objects appear fixed within the surrounding environment rather than looking like flat video viewed from an angle.
Critically, “the guest’s point of view” may refer broadly to the location of the entire ride vehicle, allowing Disney to synchronize its motion with the media presented around it.
Avengers Infinity Defense will combine large-scale physical environments with immersive media as guests travel across the multiverse and join heroes including Black Panther, Ant-Man, and Hulk against King Thanos. The perspective-shifting technology could be particularly useful for the “jump points” transporting riders between Wakanda, Asgard, New York City, and other worlds.
