A Sanford man is facing three felony charges after police say he drove 118 mph on Interstate 4 with a loaded handgun within arm’s reach, refused to stop for officers and rammed a detective’s patrol car overnight Saturday.

Jose Rosario, 21, was arrested around 2:30 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of I-4 and State Road 408, according to an Orlando Police arrest affidavit.

According to the report, an OPD detective observed Rosario’s Infiniti Sedan traveling east on I-4 from Conroy Road and paced the vehicle at 118 mph in a posted 60 mph zone.

A second officer conducted a traffic stop near the I-4 and Orange Blossom Trail interchange using emergency lights and sirens. The vehicle slowed but did not stop, police say, passing the Kaley Avenue exit without pulling over.

An officer then pulled his patrol car in front of Rosario’s in an attempt to prevent him from getting away. The affidavit goes on to say that Rosario’s car slowed, appearing to stop, then accelerated and struck the rear of one of the officer’s patrol vehicles. Additional officers assisted in bringing the vehicle to a stop, according to police.

The affidavit says a passenger in the vehicle told officers she had repeatedly pleaded with Rosario to stop the car, but he refused.

Officers located a Glock semiautomatic handgun in the seatback pocket of the passenger seat, which the affidavit describes as being within arm’s reach of Rosario and concealed from view.

Rosario was charged with dangerous excessive speeding of 100 mph or more, a third-degree felony; possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, a second-degree felony; and aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer with injury or property damage, a second-degree felony.

He was transported to the Orange County Jail without incident, police say. Rosario remains in custody at this time, jail records show.
