Body-camera video shows an encounter with a man accused of attempting to kill a police officer, according to the Eustis Police Department.

The agency released the video on Monday, after Shakoi Donovan was taken into custody.

The incident happened just before 3 a.m. Saturday near East Quayle Avenue and South Eustis Street.

According to the case report, officers say they noticed a vehicle swerving over the dotted yellow line, which they believed was an indication of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

When the driver fled from police, other patrol cars joined the search. The driver finally stopped when it appeared to be having mechanical issues, with smoke billowing from under the hood.

The body camera video shows officers trying to get the driver to leave the car but he refused to do it. They then tried to pull him out of the car, but he resisted. The report says Donovan stepped on the gas and tried to take off with one of the officers pinned between Donovan’s body and the steering wheel. Another officer was also stuck in the vehicle and traveled 10 to 15 feet before he was able to get away from the car, tumbling across South Eustis Street.

As a third officer got in his car to follow Donovan, he says he noticed the officer who had been pinned between Donovan and the car’s steering wheel was now lying in the road. The report indicated swerving tire tracks, leading the officers to believe that Donovan had swerved hard to get the officer out of the vehicle.

No word on how Donovan was arrested.

Donovan is facing charges of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, aggravated battery on a LEO, fleeing to elude, and others.

He is booked into the Lake County Jail on no bond.
