A man is facing charges after a more-than-six-hour standoff with Volusia County Sheriff’s Office deputies ended in his arrest.

Around 8 p.m. Monday, deputies were called to a home on Lake Juanita Road in Seville for a well-being check after concerns were raised about the man’s mental health and the care of animals on the property. Deputies were also advised the man had been displaying strange behavior and was believed to have been on a 40-day fast, the sheriff’s office said

According to the sheriff’s office, the situation escalated when the suspect pointed a shotgun through a window at a responding deputy.

When a deputy made contact with the suspect, Austin Mowery, 28, Mowery was rambling incoherently before going back inside the house. Moments later, Mowery pointed a shotgun at the deputy from a window. The deputy fired multiple rounds and took cover, deputies said.

VSO SWAT deputies then responded to the scene and spent more than six hours making announcements and negotiating with Mowery before he surrendered at 2:30 a.m.

No deputies, nor Mowery, were injured during the incident.

The sheriff’s office has since released body camera video of the incident.

Mowery was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail on a charge of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. He is being held without bond..
