A Look Back at the Old Costume
For years, Cast Members working Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party wore a distinct, dare I say iconic costume. A green and yellow striped shirt formed the base. It was covered in a purple bat print and finished with a white contrast collar and cuffs. Cast Members layered an orange and yellow plaid apron or vest over the shirt, trimmed in purple. The apron fell past the hip, and a solid purple skirt, shorts, or pants were worn as well. An optional purple bat-shaped headband completed the look.
The costume showed up throughout the party. Cast Members wore it while distributing wristbands at the entrance, working treat trails, and welcoming guests on Main Street USA. Its apron and skirt combination gave the outfit an old-fashioned, almost quaint quality. That set it apart from the more modern character and attraction costumes found elsewhere in Magic Kingdom.
The New Not-So-Scary Costume Design
Gone is the apron and skirt. In its place is a black button-up shirt covered in an allover print of dancing skeletons rendered in a rainbow gradient. Each skeleton appears in a different color, running from green to purple to red. A crisp white collar and cuffs provide contrast against the black background. Cast Members pair the shirt with a purple bow tie.
Below the waist, the costume shifts to dark green shorts or pants. A black belt with a silver buckle secures the bottoms. For headwear, Cast Members can choose a purple bat-shaped headband or hair accessory, styled in various ways. They can also opt for the purple bow tie worn around the neck under the collar instead. An optional black jacket and pouch round out the look.
Taken together, the changes move the costume away from its old quaint silhouette. Instead, the new design leans toward cuts already common across other Magic Kingdom Cast Member uniforms.
Fan Reaction
The new costumes have proven controversial since leaking online. Many fans have expressed disappointment with the pattern and dark colors of the shirt. Some of the reaction centers on the loss of the apron and skirt combination. That look had become a recognizable part of the party experience for longtime attendees.
Not every reaction has been negative. Some fans say the new design fits more cohesively with the darker, more modern aesthetic Disney has leaned into for recent Not-So-Scary Halloween Party merchandise and entertainment. Whether the new costume becomes a lasting fixture of the event or gets revisited in a future year remains to be seen.
