“Take Stock in Children” has reached the 3,000 pre-sale voucher threshold needed to put its “Mentoring Changes Lives” specialty license plate into production.

And that puts the plate one step closer toward hitting the streets.

The Florida nonprofit told News 6 that the state will now manufacture the plates, which are expected to become available in about 90 days.

Once purchased, $25 from each annual plate fee will go to Take Stock in Children to support mentoring services across Florida’s 67 counties.

The Legislature approved the plate in 2022, though the organization had until last month to reach the voucher goal. A donor covered the cost of vouchers, allowing supporters to claim them for free.

“Every one of those vouchers is a promise to a young person who might be the first in their family to go to college,” said Bethany Lacey, the organization’s CEO.

Founded in 1995, Take Stock in Children serves about 15,000 students annually with mentoring, college-readiness support and scholarships. It says more than 46,000 students statewide have benefited from its programs.

Alexis Vu, a Take Stock in Children alum and University of Florida freshman, said her mentor helped her navigate financial aid and apply to her dream school.

“Seeing this plate on the road means another student out there is going to get that same kind of support,” she said.

Voucher holders will receive an email with instructions for redeeming their plates at their county tax collector’s office. Once available, other Florida drivers can purchase the plate when registering or renewing a vehicle.
