The state of Florida will now begin issuing a newly designed driver license and ID card to pay “homage to Florida’s rich history,” according to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV).

Governor Ron DeSantis announced the rollout during a Florida Cabinet meeting at the Florida State Capitol on Tuesday, highlighting the new designs that state residents can expect to see.

In a release, state officials said the rollout officially kicked off on Wednesday, with the updated credentials now available at all service centers statewide.

Meanwhile, these credentials will be available for online orders here by early November.

WHAT DO THE NEW DESIGNS LOOK LIKE?

The new design features a background image on the front of the card, showcasing Castillo de San Marcos: the oldest masonry fortress in the continental U.S.

Furthermore, Florida’s iconic orange is integrated as the “O” in “Florida,” situated in the top-left corner. A manatee is displayed in the bottom-left corner, highlighting one of the state’s most recognizable native species, state officials added.

“And we couldn’t forget the Florida gator, which is incorporated into the REAL ID star in the top righthand corner of all cards,” the release reads.

The back of the card pays tribute to the Space Coast with an image of the Discovery Space Shuttle, which launched 39 missions and spent roughly a year in space before finally landing in Florida on March 9, 2011.

That also features the “Let Us Alone” motto from the state’s first unofficial flag.

WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO NOW?

While the new designs are already rolling out, Florida residents don’t have to do anything at the moment.

Residents aren’t required to replace their existing driver license or ID card, as all valid credentials will remain in circulation and be phased out over time, state officials explained.

Instead, residents may replace their current license or ID card if their current one has already expired or a required change is necessary, such as a name or address change.
