A 70-year-old woman was shot by police Thursday morning after firing a gun inside the lobby of the Port Orange Police Department, officials said.

The incident began around 8:30 a.m. at the department’s headquarters at 4545 Clyde Morris Blvd when the woman entered the main lobby, where the department’s records section is located, and fired one shot toward civilian staff. She then exited the lobby, where responding officers confronted her. She was still holding the firearm when officers opened fire, Chief Manny Marino said in a news conference Thursday.

“I don’t know if she saw an employee and that’s what she was aiming at. That will be part of this investigation as well,” Marino said.

The woman has been identified as Linda Jean Croteau. She was transported to the hospital and remains in critical condition.

Croteau was taken to an area hospital and is in critical condition. Her condition and name have not been released, pending next-of-kin notification. Three officers were involved in the shooting. None were injured, and no civilian staff members were hurt, Marino said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been notified and has taken over the investigation. A motive has not been determined.

The police department lobby will remain closed until Tuesday, Sept. 8.
