An 11-year-old Indian Trails Middle School student was arrested after allegedly sending a classmate a text message threatening to stab them, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office said.
In a release, deputies said they began investigating on Wednesday after the student’s parent reported the threat to a school resource deputy.
Investigators said the students had been involved in an altercation after school on Tuesday. The student then allegedly borrowed another student’s phone to call his mother and later sent the victim the following text:
“This (student’s name), when I catch you at school on god I will stab you [expletive] and go tell the dean you [expletive].”
The student — whose identity was not provided due to age — now faces a charge of written or electronic threats to kill or do bodily harm.
“We take all threats seriously and investigate them thoroughly,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “We don’t like arresting your child, but we will keep our schools safe from threats. That is why we ask you to be the Sheriff of your home before we have to be.”
He was taken to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility for processing, then transferred to the Volusia Family Resource Center and turned over to the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice.
Sheriff Rick Staly and Flagler Schools Superintendent LaShakia Moore urged families to report threats promptly and talk with children about resolving conflicts safely.
Threats can be reported to the FCSO at (386) 313-4911, to a school resource deputy or school staff member, or through FortifyFL.
