A man and woman have been taken into custody after investigators discovered a 12-year-old had been subject to “unreasonable physical punishment,” according to the Fruitland Park Police Department.

In a release, police said they worked with DCF to investigate allegations of child abuse at a home along Benjamin Court.

During the investigation, they found that the child had been given a “prolonged” punishment, “including being forced to kneel while holding a wooden board against a wall for extended periods of time,” police wrote.

As a result, police announced that two people — identified as William O’Brien and Cheryl O’Brien — had been arrested and now face a charge each of child abuse.

“The wooden board used during the punishment was collected as evidence, and the child was released into custody of a family member approved by DCF,” the release reads.
