A 20-year-old Palm Bay woman was killed on Interstate 95 in Brevard County after a chain-reaction crash caused by an alligator on the roadway, and a hit-and-run driver remains at large, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

On Tuesday, the victim was identified as Cassi Taylor, a Civilian Corrections Assistant who joined the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office on July 20. She was set to be sworn in Monday and was also the daughter of an IRCSO deputy, the sheriff’s office said.

The crash occurred just before midnight Sunday near mile marker 214 between Palm Bay and Melbourne in the center lane of southbound I-95.

According to an FHP report, a 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-350 struck an alligator in the road, causing a 2004 Toyota Tacoma behind it to swerve and lose control. The Tacoma overturned, ejecting Taylor into the center lane. An unknown vehicle then struck her and fled the scene.

Taylor, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Mercedes-Benz driver, a 58-year-old man from Canada, was not injured and remained on scene, the report states.

The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
