Parents and families at Riviera Elementary School in Palm Bay are grieving and demanding answers after a young boy was killed when a Promethean board fell from a wall onto him Wednesday.

The large digital display board, similar to a television and commonly used for classroom instruction, fell inside the school, according to information provided to families and Brevard Public Schools. The tragedy has left the school community shaken and raised questions about how the board was mounted, what was happening at the time and how a similar incident can be prevented.

At pickup Thursday, many parents were emotional. Some said they were uncomfortable speaking on camera but shared the same concerns: How did the board fall, who is responsible and are other boards in the district safe?

“It’s bad, it’s tragic, but I believe it could have been prevented,” said Edwin Melendez, a Riviera Elementary great-grandparent.

Melendez said families want clear answers about the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

“How did it come off the wall? Why was the child so close it?” he said.

Brevard Public Schools identified the third-party company connected to the board as Atlantic Electric Services. As of Thursday afternoon, the district had not provided additional answers to questions about the incident, including what was happening in the room at the time or how the board was installed. BPS stated it is actively inspecting the remaining boards across all campuses and cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation.

Patrick Rodriguez-Roberts, owner of The ElectPros, said his company specializes in mounting equipment and technology such as televisions. He said he is concerned about the incident and has offered to help check other boards in the district.

“From my perspective, if it’s mounted correctly, there should be not a thread of doubt that it would just fall down randomly,” Rodriguez-Roberts said.

The boy’s death has prompted support for the Riviera Elementary community, along with calls for transparency as parents wait for more information.

Brevard Public Schools has not yet released further details about any review or safety checks. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
