As families prepare to travel for Labor Day, they’re also facing record-high gas prices for the holiday weekend.

According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of gasoline is $4.14, which is 31 cents higher than the Labor Day record of $3.83 that was set in 2012.

The national average recorded during Labor Day weekend in 2025 was $3.16.

Mitch McLain was filling up his tank on Thursday in Seminole County for $3.99 a gallon and said it’s been difficult paying higher prices at the pump over the last several months.

“That’s frustrating, for sure,” McLain said. “Ideally, gas would be cheaper, but you know, it’s not ideal for sure.”

With continued volatility in the Strait of Hormuz, crude oil prices have been around $90 per barrel this week.

According to AAA, gas prices typically drop this time of year due to lower demand, but the cost of crude oil has kept prices higher.

“It’s definitely difficult. Obviously, I have to, but it definitely doesn’t make things easier,” McLain said.
