A Silver Springs man is recovering after being bitten by a shark Sunday in Key West.

David Daniel said he was walking in the water after spending the day fishing with friends when someone warned him there was a shark nearby.

“I turned around and saw it swimming along the coastline of a sandbar,” Daniel said. “Then he turned and just beelined right for me like a movie.”

Daniel estimated the shark was six to seven feet long. He said the attack happened in about two feet of water and lasted roughly two minutes.

“We were looking eyeball to eyeball,” he said.

Daniel said the shark took a large chunk out of his foot. He was able to make it back to shore, where nearby nurses and medical workers helped stop the bleeding with a tourniquet.

“By the grace of God, I was lucky enough the boat next to us docked up and was full of nurses and medics,” Daniel said.

Paramedics flew Daniel to a hospital in Miami-Dade County for treatment.

Daniel, who works as an exterminator, expects to be off his feet and out of work for six to eight weeks.

“I’m going to have to figure out a lot of things,” he said.

A friend has started a GoFundMe campaign to help Daniel while he recovers.
