Online gaming has recently led to new parental worries tied to bullying, contact from an adult or stranger, and even inappropriate sexual content being shared with kids.
A recent study by HostingAdvice.com asked parents if they are concerned about their child’s online safety while gaming, and what those specific concerns are.
Now, the survey of more than 1,000 U.S. parents found that 81% are concerned, and those parents reported several specific risks.

- 23% reported bullying or harassment
- 22% reported requests for personal information
- 21% reported contact from an adult or stranger
- 17% reported inappropriate or sexual content
- 12% reported pressure to move a conversation to another app
Surveyors say one finding that particularly stood out, is the gap between the experience and parental confidence. They say 83.5% of parents do believe their child would tell them about an unsafe, or uncomfortable interaction while gaming online.
Surveyors say parents do take precautions; 44% say they would enable parental controls, and 38% saying they would restrict chat, messaging, or even friend requests.
