A Kissimmee mother is facing multiple child neglect charges after she left her four children home alone for days while traveling to Las Vegas, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said.

On Wednesday, a juvenile called 911 to report that her 9-year-old brother had been struck in the head by a falling dumbbell at their home on Parkway Boulevard. When deputies arrived, they found four children — ages 9, 11, 12, and 14 — with no adult supervision. Fire rescue transported the 9-year-old to a hospital where he was treated and discharged, according to a news release.

After deputies reached the children’s mother, Irene Miller, by phone, she told them she was working in Las Vegas and planned to return Friday. Investigators determined she had left for Las Vegas on Oct. 18 — five days before her scheduled return. Miller told deputies a babysitter traveled from Tampa each morning to get the children ready for school and check on them in the afternoon but did not stay overnight, the news release states.

The children’s father was contacted and took all four children to his residence. When Miller, 50, landed in Florida on Friday, detectives were waiting. She was arrested and charged with four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm and booked into the Orange County Jail.

The sheriff’s office released body camera video showing Miller being taken into custody after deboarding from the plane at Orlando International Airport.

“The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office will not tolerate child neglect. These cases will be investigated, and charges will be brought against the parents who are not properly supervising or caring for their children,” said Sheriff Chris Blackmon.
