An Orlando man is now facing even more charges after he allegedly strangled a corrections officer at the Orange County jail on Sunday, according to the sheriff’s office.

In an arrest affidavit, deputies said that the officer was sitting at his desk in the facility’s detox unit when the suspect — identified as 25-year-old Anthony Rivera — came up from behind and placed an arm around his neck.

“(The officer) felt he was choked out and had a hard time breathing,” the affidavit reads.

However, investigators said that several other inmates reportedly intervened, helping the officer and keeping Rivera on the ground.

One inmate told investigators Rivera had earlier asked for help taking down the officer and taking his keys. That inmate said Rivera appeared to choke the officer for about a minute before other inmates pulled him away and restrained him.

Per the affidavit, the officer was eventually able to handcuff Rivera until other officers arrived.

Court records obtained by News 6 reveal that Rivera faced separate charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of oxycodone and fentanyl trafficking, stemming from an incident last week.

After Sunday’s incident, Rivera now faces additional charges of battery by strangulation, battery on a corrections officer, and escaping.
