A man was shot and killed after a violent confrontation, leaving families caught in the area shaken during the first day of school.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office says the incident happened in the area of Plymouth Sorrento Road and West Ponkan Road on Tuesday around 8:30 a.m. Deputies responded after getting a call about a man and a woman fighting inside a vehicle. Then the vehicle crashed, but the two people got out of the vehicle and kept fighting.

Deputies say a bystander tried to intervene in the fight and was shot. They say he was taken to an area hospital, where he were pronounced dead.

“Daryl Alexander Hill, 56, was simply trying to help someone who appeared to be in distress… when he was shot and killed,” the sheriff’s office later said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Ryan Harper said he was driving with his wife and children on their way to school when they encountered a line of cars near the intersection.

Harper said a friend who was also at the intersection told him a man was beating a woman.

“And all of a sudden, we heard a loud bang,” Harper said.

Harper said he was in the middle of the intersection when he saw debris from the crash and a body lying in the roadway.

“It’s pretty traumatizing for us all,” Harper said. “So not the best way of going back to school on day one.”

Deputies said everyone involved remained at the scene.

Detectives are investigating what sparked the fight and what led to the shooting. Investigators were also examining two damaged vehicles at the scene.

Harper said the incident was especially difficult for his family and that he expected to have a difficult conversation with his young son after school.

“I think everybody’s shaken up by it a little bit,” Harper said.

Authorities had not released additional information about the shooting.

We will make updates as more information becomes available.
