Students at Winter Haven High School arrived Tuesday wearing pink and red, the favorite colors of a 10th-grade classmate who was killed in a school bus crash Monday morning.
The school community gathered to remember Adinaluz Prieto Oyola. Classmates said she was the kind of person who would go out of her way to do the right thing and make others feel welcome.
Students raised the American flag and gathered in prayer as grief settled over the Winter Haven campus.
“There was a lot of kids crying about it, and I feel like it’s just in the moment, like it’s just, oh my gosh, we just lost a friend,” said Taylor Warren, a 10th grader.

Flowers were placed one by one in front of the Winter Haven High School sign as students and staff paid tribute to their classmate.
Laila Gunn, an 11th grader who is new to the school this year, said Adinaluz was one of the first friends she made at Winter Haven High.
“She was one of the first kind of friends I made,” Gunn said.
Warren said Adinaluz was always willing to help others and make sure people were doing what they were supposed to do.
“She would just go out of her way to make sure that everybody who was, you know, on track to what you’re supposed to do,” Warren said. “And she was right in things when nobody else was.”

For students, wearing Adinaluz’s favorite colors was one way to honor her memory as they continue to process the loss.
Their message to their friend was simple: They love her, they miss her and they are praying for her family.
“We love you. And now we love you and we’re praying for your family,” students said.
Additional tributes are being planned in the coming days. Details will be shared as they become available.
